September 28, 2019, specialists of the Glaciology Center of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, together with specialists from the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Main Directorate of Geology under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, representatives of the Border Guards of the Republic of Tajikistan and specialists of the hydrometeorological service at Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Uzbekistan held aero-visual observations of breakthrough lakes in the Shing River Basin.
Purpose of observation:
- Determination of the status of dams caused by a landslide and the risk of dam destruction;
- Determination of the impact of floods on the lake dam and river flow. The risk of temporary flooding from the effects of flooding, determining the likelihood of mudflows on homes, roads, power lines and so on;
- Determination of the state of glaciers and glacial lakes, the likelihood of glacial mudflows in case of destruction of dams of breakthrough lakes.
Aero-visual observations of breakthrough lakes in the Shing River basin showed that, in general, the dams of the lakes are strong and in a stable condition. No signs of dam destruction. On two lakes, water flow is carried out by filtration through the dam body.
