Agency on Hydrometeorology represents the Republic of Tajikistan in one of the specialized United Nations Organizations - World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The head of Agency on Hydrometeorology is the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Tajikistan with WMO.

Being the member of WMO, the Republic of Tajikistan, through its National Hydrometeorological Service (NMHS), i.e. Agency on Hydrometeorology, provides the international meteorological services with access to the national observation data network and receives information from NHMS of other countries. This activity is regulated by the Resolution 25 and 40 of the WMO Congress. Republic is a part of the WMO Regional Association II – Asia. Two stations of Tajikistan represent Global Climate Observation System, whereas 10 stations belong to the WMO World Weather Service along with 2 stations, studying upper air.

Agency on Hydrometeorology is enrolled into the Interstate Council on hydrometeorology of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and participates in its 6 working groups, developing joint policy of the CIS in field of hydrometeorology.

On January 7, 1998 the Republic of Tajikistan jointed to United Nations Framework Convention on climate change (UNFCCC) and took commitments as a Non-Annex I Party.

Agency on Hydrometeorology is implementing agency in the field of the climate change projects realization (particularly, projects on the National Communications on climate change under the UN Framework Convention on climate change). According to the decision of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFA) as of April 13, 2003 the Regional Centre of Hydrology (RCH) was established. In 2003 USAID Program in Central Asia sponsored establishment and installation of seven automated observation stations and two automated hydrological gauges supported by the Campbell Scientific Company.

Agency on Hydrometeorology cooperates with other National Hydrometeorological Services of Central Asia in the field of information exchange, which is received, processed and transmitted by the equipment of the USAID and Switzerland Mission on Aral Sea (Switzerland Agency on Development and Cooperation).

The Program of cooperation in the area of on-line information exchange between Agency on Hydrometeorology of the Republic of Tajikistan and NMHS Uzbekistan for the period 2005 – 2006 is completed.

Significant attention is focused on cooperation bridging and development with meteorological services of China, Iran, Switzerland and the CIS countries. The principal objective of the cooperation is to sustain and further enhance the global hydrometeorological system and exchange experience and technology.
