Network of the hydrometeorological stations and post/gauges was established on the territory of Tajikistan to serve the needs of the national economy, particularly, provide its head branches with hydrometeorological information in order to plan sustainable economy development and undertake measures for reducing the burden of natural hydrometeorological disasters hazard. Location of observation posts is mainly caused by natural and climatic factors as well as by the national economy and forecasting service inquiries. Key objectives of meteorological activity are:

First meteorological stations and posts/gauges located on the territory of Tajikistan were established in the second half of the 19 century. One of the first of them – Khujand – was launched in1866. By ХХ century there were 6 meteorological stations and 2 water gauges in Tajikistan at all. Currently, meteorological observations are carried on at 52 stations and 67 posts/gauges. Earlier, Department of meteorology and climate was engaged into coordinative work activity with regard to meteorological issues implementation and observation materials summarizing. Due to reorganization of the national hydrometeorological service Meteorology centre of the Agency on hydrometeorology was established.
