CENTRAL ASIAN COORDINATION FORUM ON MONITORING, ASSESSMENT, AND PREDICTIVE MODELING OF GLACIERS AND THE CRYOSPHERE

On May 25, 2026, within the framework of the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018–2028, the Central Asian Coordination Forum on Monitoring, Assessment, and Predictive Modeling of Glaciers and the Cryosphere was held.

The event was organized at the initiative of the Agency for Hydrometeorology under the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in cooperation with development partners.

At the opening of the Forum, the Director of the Agency for Hydrometeorology, Qurbonzoda Abdullo Habibullo, delivered a welcoming speech in which he highlighted the initiatives of the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the respected Emomali Rahmon, aimed at addressing issues related to water resources, glacier preservation, and climate change. Special emphasis was placed on the establishment of the Regional Cryosphere Coordination Center in Dushanbe in cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization within the framework of the implementation of the UN resolution “Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025–2034)”.

In their speeches, Ko Barrett, Deputy Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization; York Schuegraf, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Tajikistan; Thierry Humbert, Head of the Caucasus, Central and Eastern Asia Division of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC); Abou Amani, Director of the Division of Water Sciences and Secretary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme; Ko Sakamoto, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank in Tajikistan; as well as Javlon Khamdamov, representative of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), emphasized the role of the Republic of Tajikistan in addressing water- and climate-related issues.

In particular, it was noted that the objectives of the Forum are aimed at strengthening regional scientific cooperation in the field of monitoring, assessment, and forecasting of glacier and cryosphere changes, promoting data exchange and joint research, as well as integrating practical outcomes into climate change adaptation policies, water resources management, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development efforts in Central Asia.

During the Forum, plenary sessions addressed issues related to the development of scientific approaches and regional policies in the field of glacier monitoring and cryosphere management, the expansion of cooperation in glacier monitoring, cryosphere assessment, climate change forecasting and modeling, disaster risk reduction, and the development of climate change adaptation strategies.
