SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE "STUDY OF GLACIERS IN TAJIKISTAN UNDER CONDITIONS OF CLIMATE CHANGE"

On November 19, 2022 at the Geology Department of the National University of Tajikistan in accordance with the scientific plan of the event "Twenty years of research and development of natural sciences, exact and mathematical subjects in science and education, 2020-2040" and on the fields of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP-27 in Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, by specialists of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Environmental Protection Committee under the Government of Tajikistan on Glaciers of Tajikistan in a changing climate.

The Dean of the Faculty, Associate Professor R.Sh. Andamov opened the scientific conference with an introductory speech and thanked the guests for their visit and noted that on the proposed topic since the 1960s, having analyzed the works carried out in a number of river basins (Zerafshan, Varzob, Obihingob, Karatog, Surkhob, Vanch, Mukso, Eastern and Western Pamirs and others. ), depending on the location and morphological features, the scientists of the industry have been selected as the control 30 glaciers, which are used to assess the overall condition of the country's glaciers.

Then, Deputy Head of the Glaciology Center of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Nazirzoda Kamoliddin Zainidin spoke, who noted that the Republic of Tajikistan is considered one of the most vulnerable countries in terms of climate change. Specialists of the Agency for Hydrometeorology carry out expeditionary and research work on the country's control glaciers to study the condition of Tajikistan's glaciers. They also measure water runoff from glaciers, take samples for chemical analysis, and monitor meteorological processes in the observation area.

Mr. Sharofiddinov Safarhon Salomovich, Head of Hydrological Forecasting Department, of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, told about hydrological conditions of rivers in Tajikistan and stated that hydrological network is used to obtain information on surface waters and their water resources in order to study hydrological regime, maintain state water cadastre, and provide users with basic hydrological information, real information and Data necessary for hydrological forecasts are received from 34 gauging stations on a daily basis. The Hydrological Forecasting Department makes river water discharge forecasts for 1-3 days, ten-day month, and forecasts of water discharge for the growing season. The information is provided to the public and authorities through e-mail, couriers and the media. It was also said that the Agency for Hydrometeorology  has been using the MODSNOW model for remote snow monitoring since January 2020. The advantage of hydrological forecasting using the "MODSNOW" model is that the "MODIS" methodology is based on remotely sensed snow area data. Based on the data obtained, linear statistical models are developed to forecast water levels in the main rivers of Tajikistan, for possible use in making hydrological forecasts for the growing season.

Also at this conference, there were discussions about greenhouse gas emissions and other natural factors of global warming with proven facts.

In this event, teachers of the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, Professor Saidov M.S., Associate Professor Davlatov F.S., Gayratov M.T., senior teachers Gulomov M.N., Sayfulloeva K.G., Rasulov N.M. doctoral student Rahimzoda A.S. and Deputy Dean for Science Niyazov O.H. took part.

At the end of the scientific conference, Head of the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, Associate Professor Gayratov M.T. made a report and reviewed the discussed topic related to climate change and glacier melting, drinking water deficit in the region, reduction in glacier water resources, pollution of water sources and hydrological regime of rivers in Tajikistan as consequences of climate change.
