Participation in the UNESCO event: “The Cryosphere of Central Asia: From Scientific Assessment to Joint Actions for Climate Change Adaptation”

On April 23, 2026, as part of the Regional Environmental Summit 2026, the leadership and sectoral experts of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan participated in and delivered a presentation at the UNESCO event titled “The Cryosphere of Central Asia: From Scientific Assessment to Joint Actions for Climate Change Adaptation.”

During the event, representatives of the Agency for Hydrometeorology presented a report emphasizing the key role of Tajikistan’s glaciers as the main source of sustainable runoff for major transboundary rivers in the region. It was noted that, in the context of climate change, the accelerated retreat of glaciers in recent years is having a significant impact on water security, sustainable socio-economic development, and the environmental conditions of Central Asian countries. In this regard, the need to strengthen scientific monitoring, data exchange, and coordination of joint actions among countries in the region was highlighted as essential.

It was also noted that the initiative of the Republic of Tajikistan to establish a Regional Coordination Center for Glaciology in Dushanbe under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization represents an important practical step toward glacier research, coordination of scientific activities, and strengthening the capacity of countries in the region. This center could serve as a regional platform for data collection and analysis, the development of joint research, and the training of glaciology specialists.

In their presentation, the sectoral experts of the Agency also emphasized that the Republic of Tajikistan attaches great importance to strengthening international and regional cooperation in the study and protection of the cryosphere. In particular, the need to promote science-based solutions, implement joint initiatives for glacier conservation, reduce risks associated with glacier melting, and ensure sustainable water resource management was highlighted. In this regard, Tajikistan reaffirmed its readiness to expand cooperation with international organizations, scientific institutions, and countries of the region in order to implement joint initiatives.
