On 18 August 2026, at the initiative of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, in cooperation with development partners, an International Scientific and Practical Conference was held on the theme “The 35th Anniversary of the State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan: Development and Strengthening of Hydrometeorological Monitoring and Glacier Preservation under Climate Change.” The event brought together representatives of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, state ministries and agencies, scientists and experts in the fields of water resources and climate, representatives of international organizations, financial institutions, development partners, and the mass media.
The International Scientific and Practical Conference was opened by Mr. Abdullo Habibullo Qurbonzoda, Director of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. In his opening remarks, he emphasized that the conference was held in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan and aimed to showcase the country’s achievements in the development of the hydrometeorological sector, promote international initiatives for glacier preservation, and advance climate science.
In his remarks, Mr. Ziyozoda Sulaymon Rizoi Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, placed particular emphasis on the importance of developing the hydrometeorological monitoring system, strengthening scientific capacity, and protecting glaciers and water resources in the context of climate change. Welcome remarks were also delivered by Mr. Sheralizoda Bahodur Ahmadjon, Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan; Ms. Qiyomzoda Zarafo Sufijon, Member of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan; Mr. Markus Dürst, Deputy Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in the Republic of Tajikistan; Mr. Kishvar Abdulalishoev, Executive Director of the Aga Khan Foundation in Tajikistan; Mr. Ko Sakamoto, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank in Tajikistan; Mr. Sudipto Mukerjee, UNDP Resident Representative in Tajikistan, and other distinguished officials.
The speakers highlighted that the conference, dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan, serves as an international platform for the exchange of knowledge and best practices, discussion of pressing issues related to hydrometeorology, climate change and glacier protection, and the development of practical mechanisms for cooperation aimed at enhancing climate resilience and strengthening the hydrometeorological monitoring system.
During the plenary sessions, parallel sessions, and panel discussions, participants addressed key issues related to hydrometeorological monitoring, glacier protection, and climate change adaptation. In particular, the discussions focused on the following topics: “Current Challenges and Practical Solutions in Hydrometeorological Monitoring and Glacier Protection”; “The State Programme for the Study of the Cryosphere and Protection of Glaciers of Tajikistan for 2026–2034”; “Reducing the Adverse Impacts of Climate Change: Key Pathways towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”; “Glacier Protection and the Advancement of Cryosphere Research: Scientific Achievements, Monitoring and International Cooperation”; “Global Challenges, National Solutions and International Partnerships in Hydrometeorology and Climate Change”; “The Role of Investment, Innovation and International Cooperation in the Development of the Hydrometeorological Sector under Climate Change and Ways to Address Existing Challenges,” as well as other relevant issues.
It was emphasized that the main objective of the conference is to bring together the efforts of government authorities, the scientific community, international organizations, financial institutions, and development partners to discuss the challenges and prospects for the development of the hydrometeorological sector, glacier protection, and the reduction of the adverse impacts of climate change.
The outcomes of the conference are expected to contribute to the improvement of hydrometeorological monitoring and forecasting systems, the advancement of cryosphere research, increased investment in the sector, strengthened international cooperation, and enhanced national resilience to climate-related risks. The conference is also expected to make a significant contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
