The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan adopted Resolution No. 330 dated 3 June 2026 “On renaming the Vanjyakh Glacier as the ‘Tajikistan Glacier’”.

This resolution was adopted in accordance with the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On the Names of Geographical Objects” and provides for the renaming of one of the world’s largest glaciers as the “Tajikistan Glacier”.

This decision highlights the special significance of glaciers as a strategic national asset, a vital source of water resources, and an integral part of the country’s cryosphere, as well as reflects the Republic of Tajikistan’s contribution to promoting international initiatives on glacier preservation and climate change adaptation.

The Tajikistan Glacier, being one of the largest mountain glaciers in the world, plays an important role in the formation of Central Asia’s water resources and represents a significant object of scientific research and cryosphere monitoring.

In recent years, the Republic of Tajikistan has initiated a number of international efforts in the field of glacier preservation, including the proclamation of 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Preservation, the establishment of World Glacier Day (21 March), and the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences for 2025–2034.

The Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan is taking the necessary measures to implement this resolution and to promote this invaluable natural heritage of the country on the international stage.
