Second Coordination Meeting on the Implementation of the Roadmap for Strengthening the Early Warning System in Tajikistan for 2024–2027

On 10 June 2026, the second Coordination Meeting on the implementation of the Roadmap for Strengthening the Early Warning System in Tajikistan for 2024–2027 was held at the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The event was organized by the Agency for Hydrometeorology in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) within the framework of the global initiative “Early Warnings for All”.

The meeting was attended by representatives of national ministries and agencies, international organizations, development partners, and relevant institutions.

During the meeting, participants discussed the implementation progress across all four components of the Roadmap, including the development of hydrometeorological monitoring, the improvement of forecasting and warning systems, as well as the strengthening of institutional capacity and interagency cooperation.

Particular attention was given to the implementation of Component 2, for which the Agency is responsible. The Agency for Hydrometeorology presented the findings of an analytical report on the status of implementation of Component 2 activities for the period 2024–2026.

According to the report, work in the country continues on expanding the observation network, developing modern monitoring systems, and improving forecasting technologies for hazardous hydrometeorological phenomena. Among the key achievements are the deployment of the SMARTMET Alert system, the operationalization of the CAFEWS and CARFFGS early warning systems, the rehabilitation of hydrological stations, as well as the strengthening of cooperation with international partners, including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Asian Development Bank, and ECMWF.

At the same time, participants emphasized the need for further strengthening interagency coordination, digitalization of hydrometeorological data, implementation of a Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS), development of Impact-Based Forecasting (IBF), as well as mobilization of additional technical and financial support.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of further strengthening the national early warning system as a key tool for ensuring sustainable development, protecting the population, and enhancing Tajikistan’s resilience to climate and natural hazards.
